It often happens that after fervent prayer for a family, children are born to infertile couples. Sometimes heirs appear to those people who have been living together for 10-15 years and have lost hope of becoming parents. Prayer for one’s family is one of the oldest traditions, but one that is not Christian
Now let's turn a little to an alternative point of view. Orthodoxy has existed for only 2 thousand years, but the belief in the power of race is much older than our tradition. A person’s relatives in most cultures acted as a person’s guardian, the source of his strength, and the spiritual support of the family.
Ancient people kept the skulls of their ancestors, the Chinese lived for three years at the graves of their deceased parents, and life in their native land, where their grandfathers and great-grandfathers were buried, was always perceived as a blessing.
The idea of kin is also strong in those traditions that today are commonly called neo-pagans. Take, for example, the Rodnovers, who already have “genus” in their very name.

We can observe something similar in Judaism. The idea of the ancestor Abraham means a lot to a Jew. Belonging to the Jews is already a claim to some kind of spiritual exclusivity.
Consider the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew, the only one written for a Jewish audience. Where does it begin? In order to tie Christ to the genealogy of the main Jewish patriarchs.
But Christianity took a different position. All questions of blood and inheritance are abandoned. Now spiritual qualities are at the forefront:
- the main family is the Church, where the Father is God and the believers are his children;
- the only blood that unites is the Blood of Christ;
- the inheritance for the children of God is His Kingdom;
- The merit of a believer is not the circumstances of birth, but the quality of the life lived.
Through this prism, the issue of genealogy no longer seems important. So can there be such a category as gender in Christianity? Is it permissible to pray to higher powers for him?
The Bible says that children are responsible for the sins of their parents, but there is no mystical meaning here
It may seem that a person is obliged to suffer for the sins of his ancestors. This idea is suggested by the phrase that children are responsible for the sins of their parents. But this is not some theological concept.
In a sense, according to Christian belief, all people suffer for the sin of Adam and Eve. But they “suffer” and do not respond. Responsibility presupposes that a person is guilty.
The actions of parents do not curse their children, but simply influence the circumstances of their lives.
In the Christian sense, it is more correct to say that the actions of parents influence the fate of their children. There is no mysticism, karma or generic program settings here, but simply a cause-and-effect relationship:
- if a parent loses a house because of gambling, children will be born into poverty;
- if the parent is an alcoholic, the children may have hereditary diseases;
- if the parent is an uneducated and unspiritual person, the children have every chance of growing up as uncouth ignoramuses.
The worse the parent's lifestyle, the more the children will suffer. But this is not a theological, but an everyday truth.
In Orthodoxy there is a prayer for the dead, but it does not guarantee that it will be possible to atone for the sins of the family
In Orthodox Christianity there is no canonical prayer for the family as such. But its meaning is similar to prayer for the dead. Is this possible?
Undoubtedly. If a person died in the bosom of the Orthodox Church, then the Church allows us to pray for him.

Father devoted enough space in this book to the advice of the holy fathers, their sayings on certain issues. And isn’t it surprising that after the death of schema-abbot Savva in 1980, hundreds of people gathered in Pechory to see off their dear spiritual father on his last journey. There was not a person who came into contact with the priest who would not have been comforted next to him. For everyone, Father Savva had a word of love and wise instruction. -What was your spiritual father like, schema-abbot Savva? - they asked one of the spiritual children. “He created love,” was the answer. That is why the lamp on the elder’s grave in the God-created caves of the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery never goes out. But even if we have hope for God’s mercy for the dead, how can we atone for the sins of our family if we do not know the names of all our ancestors?
To do this, Priest Igor (Silchenkov) suggests reading the akathist “On the Repose of All the Dead” in front of the icon of Christ for 40 days, for which you need to take the priest’s blessing.
