Conversations about the Psalter. Kathisma third
Every Sunday, starting January 20, 2022, conversations about the Psalter are held in the assembly hall of the Sretensky Theological Seminary. The conversations are conducted by the resident of the Sretensky Monastery, teacher of the Sretensky Theological Seminary, Hieromonk Irenei (Pikovsky). Admission to the meetings is free, without age restrictions, without prior registration. Starts at 13:00.

The third kathisma includes Psalms 17–23, most of which in one way or another echo the biography of King David or generally describe the exalted role of the king as the political and spiritual leader of his people.
Psalm 17 is one of the longest in the Psalter. It is filled with dramatic images and strong emotions. This is the king’s hymn of gratitude for the victories he has won. The historical note in the inscription: "David... when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul" is confirmed by the content describing salvation from evil enemies.
Psalm 18 is characterized by its thoughtful reflection on how God reveals Himself to humanity. He reveals Himself through His creation: through the heavens in which the sun rules (vv. 2–7) and through the law (vv. 7–11).
The call from Psalm 19 “Lord! Save the Tsar" became the basis for the British anthem. It begins with the words “God save the King.” Based on the decree of Emperor Alexander I, this anthem was performed in Russia on all special occasions from 1816 to 1833.
The author of Psalm 20 addresses God as the Protector who cares for the king and his people.
The Messianic Psalm 21 is woven into the fabric of Christian thought and spirituality as its opening words “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me? (Ps. 21:2) were among the last on the lips of Jesus Christ crucified on the cross.
Psalm 23 is a song about trusting the Lord as the good Shepherd.
The main idea of Psalm 23 is the glorification of God as the “King of Glory.” This psalm is part of the Orthodox Rule for Holy Communion.
