How to read the akathist to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary - when prayer helps

In Orthodoxy there is a tradition of addressing the Mother of God: “Most Holy Lady Theotokos, save us”! This is not surprising, because she is the mother of God, and therefore the mother of all Christians. They resort to it in moments of danger, in difficult life circumstances, in case of family problems affecting children and grandchildren. Grandmothers and mothers pray, reading the akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, and hope for the support of the One who covered with her Robe those who gathered for prayer in the Blachernae Church before imminent death.

Akathist words

The words of the akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos are given below.

If you wish, you can find an akathist to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Russian, not Slavic, in order to more accurately and fully understand its meaning.

Strong prayer to the Mother of God for children

There is a prayer that is usually read together with the akathist in front of the “Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos” icon. People turn to the face of the Most Pure Virgin Mary at different moments of life - happy and not so happy, in difficult times, moments of trials and temptations.

A huge number of people gathered in the Blachernae temple on the night before the alleged barbarian raid of the Gentiles. All of them were united by the fear of impending danger. Some cowardly asked to save him personally, while others prayed for all the residents of the city. The women present in the temple first of all offered prayers for children and grandchildren, because they are the future, the key to a happy old age.

The thoughts of the gathered people were different, but the Mother of God did not make any distinctions between them. Although not everyone saw her appearance and the covering of all believers with an omophorion, everyone felt the incredible Divine Grace, support, and intercession.

You should not abandon prayers and reading the Akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. As many centuries ago, the Most Pure Mother of God continues to protect and preserve those who with faith, hope, and humility ask her for help.

But when reading the akathist, you first need to thank the Queen of Heaven for her tireless prayer to God for the entire human race. It is necessary to pray to the Most Holy Lady to be worthy of taking the path of truth and righteous life, and only then ask for something worldly - health for children and grandchildren, success in school, happiness in marriage.

In what cases does prayer help?

Many believers and people far from the Church have encountered the fact that the offered prayers and the reading of the akathist remain unanswered. This happens if a person does not fully believe in God’s providence for himself and does not trust the Creator of the Omnipresent, he believes that he himself knows what is best for him, believing that he is worthy of receiving what he asks.

Of all those praying in the Blachernae Church, only one person was able to see the miracle of the appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos - Blessed Andrei. This is no coincidence. He was a holy fool for Christ's sake, an “abnormal madman,” as they would say today. He lived in the strictest asceticism and performed incessant prayer, which allowed him to see what was hidden from the eyes of an ordinary person.

“Normal” people stop noticing the miracles happening around them and become coarser in heart. Neither a baby smiling at its mother, nor the singing of birds, nor the chirping of grasshoppers touches them. They have everything - home, work, family. They are so indifferent and fed up that neither eyewitness accounts of miraculous healings of people, nor stories of deliverance about imminent danger, nor mysterious signs move them.

But prayer and reading the akathist can only help if a person softens his hard heart, looks inside himself and draws closer to God. Only then will he understand that the supposedly random meeting in his life is not accidental, that the successful resolution of a difficult situation and the help of a friend in a difficult moment is a miracle, the timely support of God.

On the day of the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Most Pure One appeared to one blessed Andrei, because he suffered hardships, was beaten by life, but at the same time knew how to be grateful to the Lord for everything.

This is not a call to go out into the street, beg, enduring hunger and deprivation. Not everyone is capable of such a spiritual feat. But if you want your prayer to be heard when reading the akathist before the icon of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, you must first of all humble yourself, accept the events taking place in life, and trust God.

You can ask for something, but it would be good to always add at the end: “But not as I want, Lord, but as You want.”

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

Oh , Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord of the highest powers, heaven and earth to the Queen, city and country to our omnipotent Intercessor! Accept this song of praise and thanksgiving from us, Thy unworthy servants, and lift up our prayers to the throne of God, Thy Son, may there be mercy upon unrighteousness to ours and will add His grace to those who honor Your all-honorable name and with faith and love worship Your miraculous image. We are not worthy of being pardoned by Him, unless You propitiate Him for us, Lady, for all that is possible for You from Him is possible. For this reason we come running to You, as to our undoubted and speedy Intercessor: hear us praying to You, cover us with Your all-powerful protection and ask God, Your Son, for our shepherds - zeal and vigilance for souls, for city rulers - wisdom and strength, for judges - truth and impartiality, a mentor - reason and humble wisdom, for spouses - love and harmony, for children - obedience, for those offended - patience, for those who offend - the fear of God And for those who mourn - complacency, for those who rejoice - self-control, for all of us - the spirit of reason and piety, the spirit of mercy and meekness , the spirit of purity and truth. To her, Most Holy Lady, have mercy on your weak people: gather the scattered, guide those who have gone astray to the right path, support old age, young wise men, educate infants, and look upon all of us with the gaze of your merciful intercession, raise us up from the depths of sin and enlighten our heart eyes to vision of salvation. Be merciful to us here and there, in the land of earthly arrival and at the terrible judgment of Your Son. Having ceased in faith and repentance from this life, our fathers and brothers shared in eternal life with the angels and with all the saints. For You are, Lady, the glory of heaven and the hope of earthly, You, according to God, are our Hope and Intercessor of all who flow to You with faith. We pray to You and to You, as the Almighty Helper, to ourselves and to each other and to all our lives we betray, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

How to read an akathist

It is necessary to properly prepare for the reading of the akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. Retire in a quiet and peaceful place where no one will disturb you, stand in front of the icon, light a candle or lamp. Read the akathist carefully, thoughtfully, slowly.

You can first read the text of the akathist in Russian to understand what is being said. Any time will do, it doesn’t matter. Some find a moment to read the akathist during the day, interrupting and distracting themselves from the bustle of the world; for others, it is more convenient to finish all their work in the evening and get up for prayer before going to bed.

There are no special requirements for reading the akathist. At any moment of life's trials, in moments of anxiety for your children and grandchildren, you can rise to prayer, reading the akathist and turning to the Queen of Heaven for help.
