The Psalter is a book of poetry that is included in the Old Testament and contains 150 chapters or psalms. Some texts were written by other authors, but most are attributed to King David, as is Psalm 142, which is often used in church services.

A psalm to David, when his son Absalom persecuted him.

1 Lord, hear my prayer, inspire my prayer in Your truth, hear me in Your righteousness

2 And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for no one living will be righteous before You.

3 Because the enemy has driven away my soul, he has humbled my life to eat, and he has made me sit in the dark, like dead ages.

4 And my spirit is faint within me, my heart is troubled within me.

5 I have remembered the days of old, I have learned in all Your works, I have learned Your hand in all that I have made.

6 I lift up my hands to You, my soul, like a waterless land to You.

7 Hear me quickly, O Lord, my spirit has perished; do not turn Your face away from me, and I will become like those who go down into the pit.

8 I heard that in the morning show me Thy mercy, for I have trusted in Thee. Tell me, Lord, I will go the other way, because I have taken my soul to You.

9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, I have fled to You.

10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. Your Good Spirit will guide me to rightness on earth.

11 For Thy name's sake, O Lord, live me, and through Thy righteousness bring my soul out of sorrow.

12 And by Thy mercy Thou shalt consume my enemies, and destroy all my afflicted souls, for I am Thy servant.

In Russian

Psalm of David when he was pursued by Absalom his son.

1 Lord! Hear my prayer, heed my prayer according to Thy truth; hear me according to Your righteousness

2 And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for no one living will be justified before You.

3 The enemy pursues my soul, he trampled my life into the ground, he forced me to live in darkness, like those long dead,

4 And my spirit became faint within me, my heart grew numb within me.

5 I remember the days of old, I meditate on all Your works, I consider the works of Your hands.

6 I stretch out my hands to You; my soul is drawn to You, like a thirsty land.

7 Hear me quickly, O Lord: my spirit fails; do not hide Your face from me, lest I become like those who go down to the grave.

8 Grant me early hearing of Your mercy, for I trust in You. Show me, Lord, the path I should follow, for I lift up my soul to You.

9 Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; I come running to You.

10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; May Your good Spirit lead me to the land of righteousness.

11 For thy name's sake, O Lord, quicken me; For the sake of Your righteousness, lead my soul out of adversity.

12 And according to Your mercy destroy my enemies and destroy all who oppress my soul, for I am Your servant.

Then David's son Absalom revealed all his anger and greed. The young man killed his brother for the evil he had done to Absalom's sister. Despite his son’s crime, David forgave him and asked him to return home. But the kindness was not appreciated, and Absalom began to gather an army against his father. David fled from the traitors.

1196 In the end, the sons of Korah, about the mysteries, psalm, 45.

2 God is our refuge and strength, the Giver of help in the grave sorrows that have befallen us.

3 Therefore we will not be afraid when the earth is shaken and the mountains are thrown into the depths of the sea.

4 The waters made a noise and were troubled, the mountains shook with His great power.

5 The rushing waters make the city of God glad; The Almighty sanctified His monastery.

6 God is in the midst of the city, and it will not be moved; God will help him at dawn.

7 Nations were in turmoil, kingdoms were subjected; The Most High uttered His voice, and the earth shook.

8 The Lord of hosts is with us, our Advocate, the God of Jacob!

9 Come and see the works of God, what wonders He will do on earth.

10 He will put an end to war throughout all the borders of the earth; He will break the bow, and break the weapons, and burn the shields with fire.

11 “Detach yourself and understand that I am God! I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Glory:

Third penitential psalm.

Interpretation of Psalm 143

In desperation, the psalmist turned to the Lord. The author looks for help everywhere, but cannot trust anyone except God. He is the king's protector.

Verses 1-5: Petitions to the Lord for protection. The author asks to punish his persecutors, his enemies, because of whom David escaped from the throne. God's protection is needed, because the danger is mortal. In difficult moments, the king remembered the mercy of the Lord.

Verses 6-8: Even during the silence, David did not give up. He knows the true Love of the Lord for his children. And every minute the king pronounces prayers of petition.

Verses 9-11: The author asks for deliverance from traitors and enemies. David asks to teach him to live correctly, according to the instructions and commandments of God. Cleansing the soul and body from sins and misdeeds.

What is the psalm talking about?

Earthly life is full of painful experiences. Even righteous people are not immune from this. It is the saints who often have to endure injustice, persecution, and humiliation. Sometimes it becomes difficult to bear. In such a situation, you must especially try to make your petitions pleasing to God, for which you extract words from your very heart. Since God Himself commanded to seek Him, the words of faith will certainly be heard. A believer can and should show zeal in prayer, but at the same time do not forget about humility.

The psalmist’s situation is especially sad because even his body is exhausted - the flesh seems to have grown together with the bones, the heart has “dried up”, troubles burn like fire. These lines remind us of how weak the human body is. As soon as a Christian is deprived of God's mercy for only a short time, it begins to fade.

Although the man had bread, he had no appetite. Sorrowful thoughts prevented him from enjoying food. The whole strength of the righteous man consisted in constant communication with God. When the temple service stopped, the sacrifices stopped, the independence of the Jewish people ended, the mercy of God became a thing of the past. This is why life has lost its meaning and joy.

But the author of Psalm 101 is not too worried about his own problems. What upsets him most is the Lord's displeasure. Therefore, he takes upon himself the fast and weeps bitterly. Memories of past greatness only make the experience more difficult. After all, the higher someone is elevated, the more painful the fall. What lesson can be learned from these lines? Believers should see the wisdom of God not only in times of joy, but also in times of decline and trials.

Miracles

The elder, thanks to his mental prayer, possessed a gift from God - miracles and clairvoyance. There are many known cases recorded from the words of people. One day a woman from Voronezh got lost in the forest, which was located seven miles from the monastery. And suddenly she saw an old man, whose stick showed her the way. She followed it to the monastery house of Elder Ambrose. When she came closer, the cell attendant suddenly came out and asked her: where is Avdotya from the city of Voronezh? Fifteen minutes later she left the elder all in tears and sobs. And she said that Ambrose was the same person who led her to the right path in the forest.

There was another amazing case when one artisan came to Optina Pustyn to receive an order and money to make an iconostasis. Before leaving, he decided to ask the elder for his blessing. But he said that he had to wait three days. The master thought that he would waste his earnings this way, but still listened to the old monk. Later he learned that, without giving blessings for so long, the elder literally saved him from death. After all, all these three days his apprentices were guarding him under the bridge in order to rob and kill him. Only when they left did the confessor accept the master and let him go.

And one day the Monk Ambrose of Optina revived the dead horse of a poor peasant who was crying over it. A saint from a distance could, like Nicholas the Wonderworker, help people in various disasters. A lot of wonderful stories are associated with the name of Saint Ambrose. Truly, it was not in vain that Saint Macarius predicted to him that he would become a great man.
