History of the celebration
The event took place in the 4th century, in a century of fierce struggle between paganism losing its strength and Christianity gaining authority. In Phrygia, near a city called Hierapolis, there was a monastery built in honor of the Archangel Michael. Near the temple there was a spring with healing water.
- The monastery was built at the expense of one pious citizen from the city of Laodicea in memory of the miraculous healing of his daughter, who had suffered from the disease of muteness since birth. Archangel Michael, who appeared to his father in a dream, ordered the girl to be brought to the holy spring and given local water.
- When the command was fulfilled, the benefactor's daughter was able to pronounce words. Soon she and her relatives desired to be baptized, and the noble father ordered to contribute money for the construction of a temple in honor of the Archangel.
- News of the miraculous blessing spread to neighboring areas, which brought here many believers, as well as pagans who wanted to find the true faith. This gathering of the Savior’s followers was facilitated by an old man named Arkhip. He stayed in the church for more than six decades and conducted tireless sexton service. - Soon, envious and fearful pagans began to destroy the temple using an insidious and technically complex enterprise. Holy Scripture teaches us that, in addition to the physical, there is a great spiritual world inhabited by intelligent, good beings called Angels. The word "angel" in Greek means "messenger". The Holy Scripture calls them this because God often communicates His will to people through them. What exactly is their life in the spiritual world that they inhabit, and what is their activity - we know almost nothing, and, in essence, we are not able to understand. They live in conditions completely different from our material ones: there time, space and all living conditions have a completely different content. The name Michael means “Who is like God” in Hebrew. The Holy Scripture, telling about the appearance of Angels to various people, names only some of them by their own names - apparently, those who have a special mission in establishing the Kingdom of God on earth. Among them are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, mentioned in the canonical books of Scripture, as well as the Archangels Raphael, Uriel, Salafiel, Jehudiel and Barachiel, mentioned in the non-canonical books of Scripture. Archangel Gabriel usually appeared to some righteous people as a messenger of great and joyful events concerning the people of God (Dan. 8:16, 9:21; Luke 1:19-26). In the book of Tobit, Archangel Raphael says about himself: “I am Raphael, one of the seven holy Angels who offer the prayers of the saints and ascend before the glory of the Holy One” (Tob. 12:15). From here arose the belief that there are seven Archangels in Heaven, one of which is Archangel Michael.
Archangel Michael in Scripture is called “prince”, “leader of the army of the Lord” and is depicted as the main fighter against the devil and all lawlessness among people. Hence his church name “Archangel”, i.e. senior warrior, leader. Thus, Archangel Michael appeared to Joshua as an assistant during the Israeli conquest of the Promised Land. He appeared to the prophet Daniel during the days of the fall of the Babylonian kingdom and the beginning of the creation of the Messianic kingdom. Daniel was predicted to receive help from the Archangel Michael to the people of God during the period of upcoming persecution under the Antichrist. The Church reveres Archangel Michael as a defender of the faith and a fighter against heresies and all evil. On icons he is depicted with a fiery sword in his hand or a spear, overthrowing the devil. If we touch upon the etymology of the expression “Archangel Michael,” the following becomes clear: the first word consists of two parts – “arch” (elder) and “angel” (messenger), the second literally means “who is like God.”
The name of the Archangel is of Jewish origin and its translation traditionally implies a question mark, indicating that no one is equal to the Creator.
However, if we turn to the domestic version of the decoding, we will get the opposite interpretation: Mikhail - “who is like El (or El).” "El" traditionally means "God" in Russian.

History of the Mikhailovo Miracle holiday.
Legends say that not far from a city called Hierapolis, located on the territory of modern Turkey, there lived one believer named Arkhip.
One day the Lord sent him a dream, where he promised that his beloved daughter would be cured of muteness, but only if she tried the water from a source that was nearby. Soon his daughter took a sip of this healing water, after which a miracle followed - she was cured of this disease. In order to thank the Lord, this believer and his family were baptized in the spring and built a temple not far from it.
The healing spring was visited by a large number of people in order to cure various diseases. Many pagans came to the source and, after healing, converted to the Christian faith.
But there were people, the so-called idolaters, who were not delighted that a relatively new faith began to quickly gain recognition among people. They planned to destroy the temple and the adjacent source, which helps people get rid of hated diseases. The solution was found quickly.
Opponents of the Christian faith decided to flood the valley in which the church was located, bringing two rivers into one, flowing near the temple. But believer Arkhip offered prayers for the protection of the temple, and his words were heard.
Archangel Michael appeared near the temple and, with a blow of his staff, made a large cleft in the mountain. A stormy stream of water rushed there. This miracle saved the temple, and those who caused the disaster ran away in horror.
Arkhip lived in this temple for 60 years and during this time he was able to convert many pagans to the Christian faith.

They were all clothed with indescribable beauty. Soon the Angels approached the sinners who were being condemned to execution. Immediately the fire went out, the abyss stopped smoking, the disgusting animals disappeared.
When everything calmed down, Archangel Michael plunged his snow-white wing into the lake - he brought out many human souls and carried them to the shore. Then he lowered the same right wing a second time - and brought even more souls out of the lake than the first time. Then the Cherubim and Seraphim prostrated themselves before him and began to ask him to submerge the wing - for the third time.
Archangel Michael directed his kindly pleading gaze to the Lord and offered up fervent heartfelt prayers for the salvation of those suffering for their sins. Then he again plunged the snow-white wing into the lake and brought out countless new souls.
Then the Angels and Saints, having received these souls with great joy, washed them with the water of Grace, anointed them with the fragrance of joy and placed them before the face of God.
At that hour a voice came from the curtain of the Lord:

With the blessing of God, Archangel Michael approaches, clothed in robes of goodness and mercy, and announces to everyone that God has once again had mercy on the world. In Phrygia, not far from the city of Hierapolis, in an area called Herotopa, there was a temple in the name of the Archangel Michael; A healing spring flowed near the temple. This temple was built by the zeal of one of the residents of the city of Laodicea in gratitude to God and the holy Archangel Michael for the healing of his dumb daughter with the water of the spring. Not only Christians, but also pagans began to come to the source for healing; many of the pagans renounced idols and turned to faith in Christ.
In the church of St. Michael the Archangel, a pious man named Archippus performed the service of sexton for 60 years. By preaching about Christ and the example of his godly life, he led many pagans to faith in Christ. In their anger at Christians in general, and primarily at Archippus, who never left the temple and was an exemplary servant of Christ, the pagans decided to destroy the temple and at the same time destroy Archippus. To do this, they connected two mountain rivers into one channel and directed their flow towards the temple. Saint Archippus fervently prayed to Archangel Michael to prevent disaster. Through his prayer, Archangel Michael appeared near the temple, who, with a blow of his staff, opened a wide cleft in the mountain and commanded the waters of the seething stream to rush into it. Thus the temple remained undamaged. Seeing such a wondrous miracle, the pagans fled in fear, and Saint Archippus and the Christians gathered at the temple glorified God and thanked the Archangel Michael for his help. The place where the miracle happened was called Khona, which means “hole”, “cleft”.
