LIVES Saint Joseph the Betrothed came from the family of King David. In his first marriage he had four sons and two daughters. Having been widowed, Saint Joseph lived in strict abstinence. An eighty-year-old old man, he was chosen by the high priests as guardian of the virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos, who had taken a vow of celibacy. An Angel announced to him about the incarnation of the Son of God through Her. Saint Joseph was present at the veneration of the shepherds to the Newborn Child of God and at the veneration of the Magi to Him. At the direction of the Angel, he fled with the Mother of God and the Infant Jesus to Egypt, saving them from the wrath of King Herod. In Egypt, he lived with the Virgin Mary and the Infant God, earning their food by working as a carpenter. Saint Joseph died at the age of about one hundred years.

(based on the “Lives of the Saints” by St. Demetrius of Rostov)

Remembrance Day: Week of the Nativity of Christ

Troparion, tone 2:

Bring the good news, Joseph, to David the God-father of miracles: you saw the virgin who gave birth, you praised the shepherds, you worshiped the wise men, you received the news as an angel: pray to Christ God to save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 3:

Today David is filled with divine joy, and Joseph brings praise with Jacob: for they rejoice in the crown of the kinship of Christ, and ineffably sing on the earth of the one born: Generous, save those who worship Thee.

Prayer to St. right Joseph the Betrothed

O holy righteous Joseph!

While you were still on earth, great was your boldness towards the Son of God, who deigned to call you His Father, as the betrothed of His Mother, and to listen to you: we believe that now, from the faces of the righteous in the abodes of heaven, you will be heard in every request you make to To our God and Savior.

Moreover, resorting to your protection and intercession, we humbly pray to you: just as you yourself were delivered from the storm of doubtful thoughts, so deliver us too, overwhelmed by waves of confusion and passions: just as you protected the All-Immaculate Virgin from human slander, protect us in the same way from all slander in vain: just as you preserved the incarnate Lord from all harm and bitterness, so through your intercession preserve His Orthodox Church and all of us from all bitterness and harm. Weigh, O Holy One of God, as the Son of God, in the days of His flesh you had need for bodily needs, and you served them: for this reason we pray to you, and help our temporary needs through your intercession, giving us all the good things we need in this life.

We most earnestly ask you to intercede for us to forgive our sins by receiving from your betrothed Son, the Only Begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, and make us worthy of inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven through your intercession, so that we, who dwell with you in the high villages, will glorify the One Trihypostatic God , Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Saint Joseph the Betrothed. Who was the earthly father of Jesus Christ

One day, the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream to warn about the threat to the life of the Infant Jesus Christ from King Herod. The Angel also told him to go with Mary to Egypt. Joseph fulfills this command and remains with Mary and the Child in Egypt until the death of the king, thereby saving the Child and His Mother.

Saint Joseph the Betrothed is the husband of the Virgin Mary, as well as the earthly father and educator of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Joseph was nicknamed the Betrothed because he was betrothed to the Virgin Mary.

David the Psalmist, King of Israel

The holy king and prophet David was the eighth and last son of the elder of the city of Bethlehem. As a teenager, David tended his father's flocks. In his free time, he practiced singing and playing the harp. He turned his God-given ability to this art into serving God: he sang the wisdom and goodness of the Heavenly King.

At the age of 18, he became famous and earned the universal love of the people. The Philistines attacked the land of Israel. The giant Goliath challenged the Israeli to a duel. David, who brought food to his warrior brothers on the battlefield, defeated Goliath without a weapon: a stone, accurately thrown from David’s sling, hit the giant’s forehead with such force that Goliath fell and did not get up. The delighted Saul, king of Israel, made David commander of a thousand. And in this position, David acted prudently in all matters, which earned him even greater love from the people.

Saul knew from the prophet that the Lord was rejecting the kingdom from him and giving it to another. He saw David as his successor, and this irritated him. So Saul began to seek David's death. Until his death, the king persecuted David, but God saved his chosen one.

After the death of Saul, David became king of the state of Israel. The new king ruled the country wisely. He cared about pleasing God and the benefit of the people. Israel was becoming a powerful state. He used his gift as a singer to cultivate in his people the spirit of faith and piety, love for the fatherland and other virtues.

During the reign of David, a new capital of Israel was built - Jerusalem (i.e., the city of peace), which quickly flourished magnificently and richly, and subsequently Jerusalem became a famous city throughout the world.

During the years of trials, delving into the paths of Providence with special reasoning, he poured out his deep sorrow before God and asked for His help. At the same time, often from depicting his own suffering, the persecuted psalmist in a prophetic spirit was transported in his hymns into the distant future and contemplated the suffering of Christ, the Savior of the world. David's inspired narratives were subsequently collected into one Book of Psalms, or Psalter.

Life says that Righteous Joseph walked in the line of King David himself

Life says that Righteous Joseph walked in the line of King David. Joseph the Betrothed lived in the remote town of Nazareth, and he was engaged in carpentry.

From his first marriage he had 4 sons and 2 daughters. After he was widowed, he began to live a life of strict abstinence. When he turned 80 years old, the holy righteous Joseph was chosen as the guardian of the virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos, who had taken a vow of celibacy.

An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and announced the destination of the Child to Mary.

But Joseph was embarrassed by the fact that Mary’s child was from the “Holy Spirit” and since he was a right person, he decided not to make this public, and so as not to cause Mary herself suffering, he “wanted to secretly let her go” (Matthew 1: 19).

But when Joseph had such thoughts, the Angel of the Lord who appeared to him in a dream announced the destiny of the Child who would be born to Mary. The angel said to him: “Joseph, son of David! Do not be afraid to accept Mary your wife; for that which is born in Her is of the Holy Spirit; She will give birth to a Son, and you will call His name Jesus; for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21).

An Angel appeared to Joseph in me and informed him of the destiny of the Child born of the Virgin Mary.

Saint Joseph decides to do as the Angel told him, he humbles himself and preserves virginity, and then he himself names his son Mary, as this was revealed to him in a dream.

Holy Righteous Joseph the Betrothed

Peace to you, dear visitors of the Orthodox website “Family and Faith”!
From the Church we know about Joseph the Betrothed that he is a man who knows how to keep a secret, a man of simple physical labor and a home educator of the Lord Jesus Christ and, of course, the keeper of the virginity of the Virgin Mary.

Holy Righteous Joseph the Betrothed

We meet Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew at the end of the first chapter, where the Nativity Conception is located, about how the Nativity of Christ happened.

Church tradition reports that Joseph was much older than Mary. The Mother of God was very young according to our age, she was barely fourteen years old. She left the Temple of Jerusalem because it was impossible for her to be there, since she had become a full-fledged girl. The girls left the temple upon reaching marriageable age. In the Christian era, Roman law determined the possibility of marital cohabitation from the age of twelve.

The Venerable Joseph was betrothed to Mary. But before getting together with Her, he found Her pregnant. This was around the third month. But no one on earth could ever imagine that a girl could be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph didn’t think about it either, because it’s impossible to think about it. Joseph, being righteous, wanted to secretly release the Virgin Mary. This is what the Gospel of Matthew says.

Let him who has no sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.

The Law of Moses, which was given to the Jews, determined the punishments for breaking them. The Lord, protecting his children from terrible sins, determined the death penalty for sodomy, bestiality and simply fornication. A girl who conceives out of wedlock should be stoned.

Chapter 8 of the Gospel of John tells how a harlot caught in adultery was brought to Christ. Christ was put in front of an almost insoluble dilemma. This woman was caught in adultery, and the law commands us to stone such people. What do you say? - they asked Christ. And the Savior came out of this situation as God, saying: “He who among you has no sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” It is known that while the people who brought this woman to the Savior stood, Christ wrote something in the sand with his finger. One of the saints made a guess that he wrote the names of those people who brought this woman, and next to their names were the most severe falls into sin. And slowly people dispersed. When after some time Christ raised his head and looked at this woman, he asked: “Where are those who condemned you?” To which the woman replied: “No one, Master.” - “I don’t condemn you either, go and don’t sin in the future.” Christ Divinely escaped the accusation of both inhumanity and cruelty towards sinners, and the accusation that he violated the law. He's just above the law.

The secret hidden behind ordinary life

Joseph the Betrothed also exceeded the law. He could not even think that the Child born of Mary was the Lord. He decides to let her go so as not to put some kind of shame on himself and her. And at this moment the heavenly forces intervene. And as the Apostle Matthew says, an angel comes to Joseph in a dream and says: “Son of David, do not be afraid to accept Mary, your wife, what is born in her of the Spirit is Holy. Will give birth to a Son. You will call His name Jesus. For He will save His people from their sins.” The name Jesus was also revealed to the Virgin Mary, when Archangel Gabriel preached to Her, he told her what to name the Child. The name was decided in the Eternal Council.

Joseph wakes up and does as he is told. She accepts Mary, does not know Her, and finally, She gives birth to her Firstborn Son and calls His name Jesus. Joseph falls into a state of service. He takes up the service. Great secrets are announced to him, which he cannot tell anyone. He is now forced to remain silent until death and be a participant in mysterious events. He is entrusted with the life of a deep, silent righteous man who understands everything, knows everything, but is silent about everything.

Joseph knew that Mary was a Virgin, conceived by the Holy Spirit, gave birth to a Son, whose name the Archangel named, He would save people from sins. And who then is Joseph himself in this situation? He is assigned to Them to guard Them, to preserve for human eyes a certain picture of ordinary life. It was impossible for the Virgin Mary to live with her Son Jesus without a husband. Who would believe that this Child’s Father is God, that Mary is the Mother of God? Nobody would believe it. And in a sense they are excusable in their disbelief. This is beyond reason. Christ had to first grow up, then do everything that He did, then die on the Cross, then be resurrected, then give the Holy Spirit to the disciples, give birth to His Church. And only then, with great difficulty, people began to believe that this is the Virgin Mary - she is the Mother of God, Her son is the Lord, and so on. Before this it was completely out of my mind. It was necessary to hide this Secret behind a picture of ordinary human life.

Therefore, Joseph the Betrothed was given to the Virgin Mary for protection, as a nourisher, guardian and legalizer of this family situation, in which Mary looked like a young wife of an elderly husband with a small child.

Flight to Egypt and return to Nazareth

And then the Savior of the world is born. Magi from the east come to him to worship, simple shepherds. The cruel, wicked King Herod, who seized power by deception, also learns of the birth of the Messiah.

When Herod wants to kill the Christ Child, the need arises to save Jesus. Joseph may have doubts. The angel only recently says that He who is born of the Virgin Mary will save his people, that is, He is the Savior. And here He himself needs to be saved. An angel comes to Joseph in a dream for the second time and says: “Get up, take the Child and the Mother and run to Egypt, for Herod is looking for the soul of the Child.” Joseph, without asking anything, fulfilled the Angel’s command. And when the danger had passed, the Angel again appeared to Joseph with the command: “Get up, take the Child and His Mother, and either to the land of Israel. All who sought the soul of youth died.”

Joseph fulfills what was said, returns to the land of Israel and settles in the city of Nazareth. And here, in Nazareth, Joseph took on the task that lies on the shoulders of any father. Give two things to your son: the beginning of religious education and a craft. The son is a continuation of the family name, and he had to be raised and trained especially. Joseph makes Jesus Christ a carpenter. Joseph taught Jesus to pick up every tool and earn his daily bread in a difficult, savvy way of earning money. Joseph taught Christ to work and pray.

Righteous Joseph has great power before God in prayers

We turn to the Mother of God very often. It is worth adding to these requests also requests to Joseph, because in the prayer to him there are the following words: “Oh, holy righteous Joseph! You, while still on earth, had greatness; you had boldness towards the Son of God, who deigned to call you His father, as His Betrothed to His Mother, and to listen to you.” The Lord will also listen to Joseph in fulfilling the commandment to honor his father and mother. Righteous Joseph truly has great power before God in prayer. Joseph performed a great ministry during Jesus' childhood.

The Miracle of the Living God Coming to Earth

After the birth of Jesus Christ, Joseph receives revelations twice more

After the Virgin Mary gives birth to Jesus Christ, Joseph receives special revelations twice more. The second time the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream in order to warn him about the threat to the life of the Baby from King Herod.

The Angel also tells Joseph to go with Mary to Egypt. Joseph fulfills this command and remains with Mary and the Child in Egypt until the death of the king.

An angel tells Joseph to go with Mary and the Child to Egypt to escape the evil King Herod.

Then in Egypt the Angel again appears to Joseph and informs him that the danger has passed and he can return to his homeland:

“... get up, take the Child and His Mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child’s soul are dead.”

After Joseph comes to the land of Israel, he learns that his son is reigning instead of Herod. Out of precaution, he goes with his holy family to Galilee to settle with everyone in Nazareth. According to the Gospel narrative, the last time Joseph appears is in the story of the pilgrimage of the holy family to the Jewish Passover in Jerusalem, when Jesus is already 12 years old.

Apostolic reading:

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Galatians, chapter 1, verses 11 - 19

11 I declare to you, brethren, that the gospel which I preached is not that of men, 12 for I also received it and learned it, not from man, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 You have heard about my former way of life in Judaism, that I cruelly persecuted the Church of God and devastated it, 14 and prospered in Judaism more than many peers in my generation, being an immoderate zealot of my fatherly traditions. 15 But when God, who chose me from my mother’s womb and called me by His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me, so that I might preach Him to the Gentiles, I did not then consult with flesh and blood, 17 and did not go up to Jerusalem to those who preceded me. to me the Apostles, but went to Arabia, and again returned to Damascus. 18 Then, after three years, I went to Jerusalem to see Peter and stayed with him for fifteen days. 19 But I saw no other of the apostles except James the brother of the Lord.

Priest Anthony Borisov comments

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Ephesians, chapter 6, verses 10 - 17

10 Finally, my brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the might of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, 12 for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 For this purpose take on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having done everything, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 And above all, take up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery arrows of the evil one; 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

One apocrypha is dedicated to Joseph, which arose in Egypt at the turn of the 3rd-4th centuries

It is also worth saying that another apocrypha is dedicated to Joseph - “The Story of Joseph the Carpenter,” which arose in Egypt at the turn of the 3rd-4th centuries.

The apocrypha tells that Joseph makes a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to ask for help from the Archangel Michael himself at the hour of his death.

It is also reported that Christ himself, who appeared to his earthly father, promises that his body will not decay until his coming in 1000 years and the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on this earth.

The Apocrypha reports that Joseph the Betrothed died at the age of 111, and his burial was performed by the angels themselves. If you believe the legend, then his body was buried in the Gethsemane cave, where by that time the parents of the Most Holy Theotokos herself were already buried.

Several icons were written to Joseph the Betrothed

There is also an icon of Joseph the Betrothed. On it Joseph is depicted with the Savior.

There are also several versions of icons on which Joseph the Betrothed is depicted with the Most Pure Virgin Mary, and in her arms sits the Baby Jesus Christ.

Sunday, January 9, 2022, after the Nativity of Christ

Sunday is a day off, which every Christian devotes to God and His works, first of all, to visiting church. On this day we put aside other things to participate in the liturgy.

In the “Getting Ready for Sunday” project, we are trying to help you consciously come to Church, study the traditions and features of the service in advance, get acquainted with a passage from Holy Scripture and its interpretations, as well as the short lives of the saints commemorated by the Church on Sunday, January 9 .

They pray to the icon of Joseph the Betrothed for meekness and humility

What does it help with, and what do they pray for to the icon of Joseph the Betrothed? They ask Saint Joseph for meekness, humility, and love for one’s neighbor.

Everyone who bears this name must have an icon at home. You can buy such an icon in almost all churches and monasteries.

In front of the icon of Joseph the Betrothed, mothers pray for the arrangement of the fate of their daughters.

If you buy an icon in a temple, then you can immediately place it in the red corner of the house, but if the icon was purchased, for example, in a jewelry store, then it must be consecrated in the temple before placing it at home.

A prayer has been written to Joseph the Betrothed, which can be read at home in front of the icon

There is also a prayer written to Joseph the Betrothed, which can be read at home in front of the icon. You can turn to Joseph in your own simple words, without reading prayers. The most important thing is that your prayers come from the heart, because only the most sincere prayer will be heard.

Prayer:

We most earnestly ask you to intercede for us to forgive our sins by receiving from the Son you are named, the Only Begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, and make us worthy of inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven through your intercession, so that we, who dwell with you in the high villages, will glorify the One Trihypostatic God , Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
