Prayers “On the Road”: to the Lord God, Saint Nicholas and Saint Catherine

Many people travel. These include both long-term tourist tours to distant countries and ordinary trips to the country. As you know, any road is associated with danger. Prayer for travelers is a very strong amulet that will protect a person in the most difficult situations.

In addition, every person, getting ready to travel, begins to experience inner excitement. Prayer will help you calm down and collect yourself wisely. It is important to say prayer words sincerely, with faith that the Higher Powers will definitely provide you with reliable protection. It is necessary to fully realize and understand the spoken prayer phrases; you cannot automatically repeat memorized words. The prayer should be read alone with complete concentration.

Prayer for those traveling by air

Today people very often travel by plane. This is a very convenient type of transport that allows you to cover vast distances in a short time. But many people have an inner fear of air travel.

To get rid of it and calm down, you should read the following prayer before the flight:
“I, the servant of God (proper name), turn to the Savior of the human race, the Great Lover of Humanity, Jesus Christ. You are our Lord and Creator, commanding all the elements and maintaining power over everything. You are revered by all, You control the movement of the abysses and stars, everything created by You rejoices in You and accepts Your mercies and blessings. All believers humbly obey your will. You alone are sinless, good Lord. So show us sinners your mercy, do not punish us for voluntary and involuntary sins committed through our foolishness. Do not punish us for the iniquities of our ancestors, for we repent of all the sins of the human race, grant us your mercy and guide us to the true path. YOU, Lord God, Almighty Ruler of heaven, listen to my prayers, servant of God (proper name), bless my air travel. Forbid the raging winds during my flight, keep the aircraft intact, let it fly safely from the starting point to the final destination. Grant me peace of mind and faith in the successful outcome of my air travel. You alone are Savior and Deliverer, I believe in Your power and hope in Your blessings. I glorify You and accept Your will. Amen".

Prayers to the Lord for safety on the road

It is customary for Christians to ask the Lord’s blessing before starting any business.

This tradition is especially relevant on the eve of a trip. Indeed, at such a moment, people need concentration and patience sent by higher powers. To obtain them, you should read a short prayer to God:

Prayer for those traveling by car (car)

If you have a long trip by car, you should take care of your own protection on a spiritual level. To do this, you should use a special prayer.

It must be read immediately before departure, and it reads as follows:

“Lord God Almighty, All-Good and All-Merciful! You are a protection for everyone and you bestow your mercy on everyone. I turn to you, servant of God (proper name), and ask you to pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for me, so that my path will be without obstacles and dangers. Protect me, Lord, from accidental death on the road, protect me from all unpleasant surprises. I humbly accept Your will and believe in Your mercy. Forgive all my sins, known and unknown, for I sincerely repent of them. Don't punish me for my wrongdoings. Protect me and all those who travel with me. Help us all get where we need to go safe and sound. Merciful God, do not allow evil spirits to harm me on the road and deliver me from devilish temptations that can awaken the spirit of drunkenness and recklessness, which can lead to a sinful death that has no repentance. Save and preserve me, Lord, on the road! Let me live many years with an unclouded conscience and true thoughts. Don’t let me experience grief, don’t let me bear the burden of responsibility for dead and maimed people all my life because of my dishonesty and negligence on the road. Your holy name will be glorified for your mercy in my prayers now and forever. Amen!"

Which saints should you pray to when going on the road?

The priests do not recommend constantly reading the petition during the journey; you can behave as usual, spending time talking with passengers, but carefully monitor the route.

Amulet for the driver

You should mentally turn to the Heavenly Powers only a few times during the entire journey.

Before you go on the road, it is recommended:

  • sitting behind the wheel, cross yourself and mentally ask the Almighty for a blessing for a successful trip;
  • read the prayer request three times;
  • sign yourself with the sign of the cross and hit the road with a light heart.

Other prayers for travelers:

  • Prayer for airplane travelers
  • Prayer to Saint Nicholas on the road and journey

It is advisable to memorize the text of the prayer appeal, but you can write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in your car at all times.

The main prayer of the driver

All-merciful and All-Merciful God, who protects everything with His mercy and love for mankind, we humbly pray to You, through the intercession of the Mother of God and all the saints, save us, sinners and people entrusted to me, from sudden death and help us deliver unharmed to everyone according to his needs. Dear God! Deliver us from the evil spirit of recklessness, evil spirits, alcoholism, which causes misfortune and sudden death without repentance. Save and help us, Lord, with a clear conscience to live to a ripe old age without the burden of people killed and maimed due to my negligence, and may Your Holy Name be glorified now and forever. Amen

And like Thy servant Tobiah, send a Guardian Angel and mentor, preserving and delivering them from every evil situation of visible and invisible enemies, and instructing them in the fulfillment of Thy commandments, peacefully and safely and healthily, and returning them safely and serenely; and grant them all their good intentions to please You safely and fulfill them for Your glory. It is Yours to have mercy and save us, and we send up glory to You with Your Beginning Father and with Your Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Behold, on the journey that lies before me, now I want to leave and for the time being I entrust to You, my most merciful Mother, my soul and body, all my mental and material powers, entrusting everything to Your strong gaze and Your all-powerful help. O good Companion and My protector! I earnestly pray to Thee, that this path may not creep; guide me on it, and direct it, O All-Holy Hodegetria, as She herself did, to the glory of Thy Son, my Lord Jesus Christ, be my helper in everything, especially in this distant and on a difficult journey, protect me under Your sovereign protection from all the troubles and sorrows that come our way, from enemies visible and invisible, and pray for me, my Lady, Your Son Christ our God, that He may send His peaceful, faithful mentor and guardian to help me. of old gave food to His servant Tobias Raphael in every place and at all times, who kept him on the road from all evil: thus, having successfully managed my path and keeping me healthy by the heavenly power, may He return me peacefully and completely to my home for the glory of His Holy name, glorifying and blessing Him all the days of my life and magnifying You now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Saint Nicholas of Christ! Hear us, sinful servants of God (names), praying to you, and pray for us, unworthy, our Creator and Master, make our God merciful to us in this life and in the future, so that he does not reward us according to our deeds, but according to his own He will reward us with goodness. Deliver us, saints of Christ, from the evils that come upon us, and tame the waves, passions and troubles that rise against us, so that for the sake of your holy prayers the attack will not overwhelm us and we will not wallow in the abyss of sin and in the mud of our passions. Pray to Saint Nicholas, Christ our God, that he may grant us a peaceful life and remission of sins, and salvation and great mercy for our souls, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Appeal to Saints Cyril and Mary

Therefore, together with our reverend and God-bearing father Sergius, your beloved son, we naturally acquired boldness towards Christ God and His Most Pure Mother. Even now, be prayer books and intercessors for us, unworthy servants of God (names). Amen.

Prayer to the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste

O passion-bearers of Christ, who courageously suffered in the city of Sebaste, we earnestly resort to you as our prayer books and ask: ask the All-Bounteous God for forgiveness of our sins and correction of our lives, so that in repentance and unfeigned love for each other, having lived together, we will boldly present ourselves to the terrible judgment of Christ and through your intercession we will stand at the right hand of the Righteous Judge. To her, God's servants, awaken us, God's servants (names), protectors from all enemies visible and invisible, so that under the shelter of your holy prayers we will get rid of all troubles, evils and misfortunes until the last day of our life, and thus glorify the great and venerable name of the Almighty Trinity, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer for the road to Saint Procopius

Hear us sinners, who now stand before your Holy Icon and tenderly pray to you: let us pray for us (names) to Jesus Christ our God and His Mother, our Lady Theotokos, to forgive us the sins we have committed. Ask the Lord for the benefit of your soul and body for mercy, peace, blessing, so that we may all be delivered on the terrible day of judgment, and that we may be saved, and stand at the right hand with His chosen ones to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, as to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship. His beginningless Father and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Psalm 90

Living in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the shelter of the Heavenly God. Says the Lord: Thou art my Protector and my Refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako Toy will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words. His cloak will overshadow you, and you will trust under His wing. His truth will surround you with a weapon, you will not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies in the days, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak and demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will fall at your right hand, but it will not come close to you. Look before your eyes, and you will see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope, You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not come close to your body. As His Angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone. Tread on the asp and the silisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him and glorify him; I will fill him with long days, and show him My salvation.

Prayer before departure on air travel

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, command the elements and contain the whole handful, Whose deeps tremble and Whose stars are present. All creation serves You, all will listen, all will obey You. You can do everything: for this reason, you are all merciful, Most Blessed Lord. So even now, Master, accepting the warm prayers of Your servants (their names), bless their path and the air procession, forbidding the storms and the opposite wind, and the wind of the air keeping your life safe and sound. Giving them a saving and non-stormy passage through the air, and the good intention of those who accomplished it, they will have fun in health and return in peace. For You are the Savior and Deliverer and the Giver of all good things, heavenly and earthly, and we send glory to You with Your Beginning Father and Your Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and in sure and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Traveling Children

Before traveling, be sure to offer a prayer of protection for traveling children. They are more vulnerable, so they face greater dangers on the road. But thanks to strong prayer, the child will endure any move without problems.

The prayer might sound like this:

“I, servant of God (proper name), direct my prayer to the Lord God. I ask for help and support on the road for my children. Let them easily endure the long journey, and the time on the journey will pass unnoticed for them. Lord, do not forsake my children and do not punish them for my voluntary and involuntary sins, of which I sincerely repent. I praise you, O Lord, and glorify your name. Amen".

Prayer "Hodegetria" for travelers

The Icon of the Mother of God “Hodegetria” became especially revered from the beginning of the 12th century. Translated, this name sounds like “Guide”. Therefore, it is believed that this icon must be in the house of a person whose activities are related to travel. If you read a special prayer in front of this icon immediately before the road, you can protect yourself from a variety of troubles while traveling. You also need to take a small icon with you on the road; it will become a protective amulet. Periodically, during stops along the way, you should pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for the granting of well-being during your journey.

The prayer appeal sounds like this:

“Oh, wonderful Queen of Heaven, Most Holy Theotokos, Mother of God, who gave our world the Savior. Hear my prayer, sinner and unworthy. With sighs and tears in my eyes, I, servant of God (proper name), turn to you with a heartfelt prayer. Deliver me from grief and sadness on my journey, do not let the irreparable happen. Protect me on the road from all misfortunes and slander of enemies. Save me from evil on the road and grant me strength to complete the journey safely. Ask the Lord for forgiveness of my voluntary and involuntary sins, so that they do not become God’s punishment for me. Pray the Most Holy Theotokos to your Son to save us and give us hope of finding peace for the soul in the Kingdom of Heaven. Until the end of my days I will extol your holy name and glorify the deeds of God. Amen".

Psalm 26

Audio:

2:08

Lord is my enlightenment and my Savior, whom will I fear? Lord, Protector of my life, from whom shall I fear? Sometimes you come close to me with malice, even if you tear away my flesh, those who insult me and attack me, you become weak and fall. Even if a regiment rises up against me, my heart will not fear: even if it rises up to fight against me, I will trust in Him. I have asked one thing of the Lord, and I will require this: that I may live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may behold the beauty of the Lord and visit His holy temple. Because He hid me in His village in the day of my evils, He covered me in the secret of His village, He lifted me up on a rock. And now, behold, I have lifted up my head against my enemies: I have eaten and devoured in His village a sacrifice of praise and shouting: I will sing and sing praises to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, my voice, which I have cried, have mercy on me and hear me. My heart says to you: I will seek the Lord, I will seek your face, O Lord, I will seek your face. Do not turn Your face away from me, and do not turn aside with anger from Your servant: be my helper, do not reject me and do not forsake me, O God, my Savior. For my father and mother abandoned me, but the Lord will receive me. Establish the law, O Lord, in Thy way, and guide me on the right path for my enemy’s sake. Do not betray me to the souls of my afflicted ones: for I have stood up as a witness of unrighteousness, and lied untruthfully to myself. I believe in seeing the good Lord on the earth of the living. Be patient with the Lord, be of good courage, and let your heart be strong, and be patient with the Lord.

The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: whom shall I fear? If evildoers, my opponents and my enemies come upon me to devour my flesh, then they themselves will stumble and fall. If a regiment takes up arms against me, my heart will not fear; if war arises against me, then I will hope. I asked one thing from the Lord, this only I seek, that I might abide in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to contemplate the beauty of the Lord and visit His [holy] temple, for He would have hidden me in His tabernacle on the day of trouble, He would have hidden me in secret places. the place of His habitation, He would lift me up onto a rock. Then my head would be lifted above the enemies surrounding me; and I would offer sacrifices of praise in His tabernacle, and would begin to sing and make melody before the Lord. Hear, O Lord, my voice with which I cry, have mercy on me and listen to me. My heart speaks from You: “Seek My face”; and I will seek Your face, O Lord. Hide not Your face from me; do not reject Your servant in anger. You were my helper; do not reject me and do not forsake me, O God, my Savior! for my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will receive me. Teach me, O Lord, Thy way and guide me on the path of righteousness, for the sake of my enemies; Do not hand me over to the mercy of my enemies, for false witnesses have risen up against me and breathe malice. But I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Trust in the Lord, be of good courage, and let your heart be strengthened, and trust in the Lord.

Prayer book: prayers for wanderers and travelers

Prayers for help and protection while traveling are a very effective tool. They are a talisman and allow you to calm down and make the right decisions in extreme situations. All prayer provides a channel of communication with our great Creator. Being in spiritual contact through prayer, a person has the opportunity to strengthen his natural protection.

How to read Orthodox prayers on the road

Prayers are usually read immediately before a trip. To do this, you need to retire and tune in accordingly. There should be no negativity in your soul; remember, you should go on any trip in a good mood. Each spoken phrase must be fully conscious. That is why it is better to pray in front of the dear Lord God and other saints in Russian.

If spiritual prayer arises, then you can offer prayers for the traveler on the way. As a rule, this is done during stops, for example, when traveling by car. You can pray for good luck and well-being on the road not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. But in any case, it is very important that the prayer appeal sounds sincere.

What is the power and essence of prayer before setting off on a journey?

Any prayer on the road, first of all, allows a person to calm down and remove unnecessary anxiety from the soul. In the old days, before a long journey, a person came to his confessor and asked for a blessing. After this, the Christian gained confidence that nothing would happen to him on the road, because prayers were being offered for him.

The power of prayer is in a person’s faith. The prayer appeal will be effective, if you believe in it, then your words will be heard by the Higher powers, and they will definitely help you. You need to understand that the power of prayer before setting off on a journey lies in the fact that it creates energetic protection and allows a person to push away dangers and troubles, and therefore ensure safety on the road.

Prayers on the road charge a person with positive energy. And, as you know, a person with a positive attitude attracts all the good things and always pushes away the negative. This is very important on the road, as you can reduce the risk of unpleasant situations.

How to read these prayers correctly?

You need to be properly prepared for reading prayers. The first condition is that you need to be clean in body, that is, you need to wash yourself before prayer, put on clean clothes, and if you pray at home, you need to wash the floors.

It is also necessary to maintain purity of thoughts, no envy, evil, foul language, blasphemy and other vicious thoughts, only good, bright thoughts and desires.

Next, you need to retire to a room, close your eyes, imagine that you are standing before God, wait a little until all the feelings inside calm down and thoughts leave your head. Light a lamp, if you have the priest’s permission to do so, and, slowly, begin to pray, saying word by word, making the sign of the cross.

Parable “About Silent Prayer”

Prayer has enormous power, but only when it is sincere, when at the moment of prayer a person is completely immersed in the world of God, forgetting about worldly affairs. To confirm this, I would like to tell you a small legend about silent prayer:

One elder thought about why so many people go to church, pray, but their lives remain the same. One day, in such thoughts, he fell asleep and dreamed of an Angel who lifted him high above the ground. And only quiet gentle sounds were heard there.

“These are Orthodox prayers, the prayers of people who, forgetting about worldly affairs, selflessly pray to God. The rest of the prayers are not heard here" -

said the Angel.

Namaz on the way - to shorten it or not?

Let us note that the reduction from four fard rakyaats to two is justified by the Quranic text, reliable sunnah and the absolute agreement of scholars (ijma').

Is it necessary for a traveler to shorten these prayers? Does he have the right to independently choose the most acceptable for himself (reduce to two or perform all four rak’ahs)? In answering this question, Muslim scholars focused on various authentic hadiths, resulting in the following opinions:

1. Be sure to reduce. This is what Hanafi theologians say. Among the arguments in favor of just such a practical approach, they cite a reliable hadith from 'Aisha: “Prayer-namaz was initially obligatory in two rak'yats. For the traveler it remained at two, but for the place of permanent residence it was expanded to four.”[10] A similar hadith was reported by Ibn 'Abbas[11].

2. Scholars of the Shafi'i madhhab say that shortening prayers on the road is permissible. A person himself can choose the most acceptable for himself, but it is better to reduce it to two than to do it in full form. The priority is to reduce it to two for the reason that the Prophet, as well as the righteous caliphs, being travelers, always shortened the four-rak prayers.

Traveler's prayer

In their lives, people have to make various trips, ranging from trips to a village or to visit relatives in another city to visits to distant countries. For some, even the journey to work can be called a whole journey, which can take several hours.

During such trips, believers may experience certain difficulties in observing religious instructions, and therefore the Almighty has granted Muslims mercy in the form of a simplified version of the prayer for travelers.

In the Qur'an, the Creator addresses His slaves:

“When you travel on earth, there will be no sin on you if you shorten some of your prayers” (4:101)

However, not every traveler has the right to shorten the prayer, since much depends on the distance traveled and the time spent in one place. A traveler in Islam is considered to be one who has covered the distance from his own home, which a person can cover on foot in at least 18 hours. If we consider that the average walking speed of a person is 5 km per hour, then in 18 hours he is able to walk about 90 kilometers, or, taking into account fatigue, about 85-87 km. Thus, a Muslim who has traveled 87 km or more from home has the right to shorten his prayers. If he left his destination when the time for some prayer had already arrived, then he should not shorten this prayer, even if he set off on the road a couple of minutes after the time for prayer arrived.

As for the length of stay in one place, the opinions of scientists here are divided, since there are no clear instructions on this issue in the Noble Sunnah. Hanafi theologians say that a traveler is one who intends to stay in a new place for less than 15 days. Based on this, if a person plans to stay for 15 days or more, then he does not have the right to shorten his prayers in a new place, while directly on the road he has the right to perform a shortened prayer. Representatives of the Shafi'i madhhab, in turn, call the figure 4 days, that is, only one who stops at a new place for a period of less than 4 days can be considered a traveler.

If a believer has arrived at his destination and cannot plan when he will go back, then he will be considered a traveler, even if he remains there for a couple of months while waiting to leave.

Shortening prayers by a traveler

The right to reduce the number of rak'ahs for travelers does not apply to all prayers. It is allowed to make shorter only the obligatory (fard) prayers, which include 4 rakats, that is, midday (zuhr), afternoon (asr) and night (isha) prayers. Morning (Fajr) and evening (Maghrib) prayers on the road are read in the same way as at ordinary times.

Theologians do not have a unanimous opinion about the extent to which it is necessary to shorten prayers on the journey. Some scholars, for example, Hanafis, believe that believers need (wajib) to shorten their prayers while traveling. Others, in particular the Shafiites, are confident that a person can decide for himself whether he should shorten the prayer or not.

If a Muslim on the road performs prayer with jamaat and behind an imam who does not shorten the prayer, then in this case the traveler should perform a full prayer.

As for performing desired prayers (sunnat) while traveling, here the opinions of theologians also differed. Some argue that believers should not perform prayers on the road, except for the obligatory ones, while others believe that a Muslim has the right to perform them, but in full form, that is, without shortening them. Still others even believe that they should be performed (replenished), but in a calm environment, and not while on the road.

Combining prayers on the way

Another relief for the traveler is the right to combine prayers, that is, to read the midday and afternoon prayers together and the evening and night prayers. Thus, de facto, it turns out that a Muslim can perform three prayers on the way, which is also the mercy of the Creator towards His servants. This is confirmed by the hadith, which says that while on the road, the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) always combined the midday prayer with the afternoon one, and the evening prayer with the night one” (quoted by Bukhari).

There are also two opinions among scholars about the admissibility of combining prayers by travelers. Some believe that this is permissible and that the faithful should do it. Others believe that in such situations one should delay the time of one prayer as much as possible and read it, and immediately after that perform another, without thereby violating the rule “each prayer has its own time.” As proof of their position, they cite the hadith: “I saw that when the Messenger of the Almighty (s.g.w.), who was on the road, had to hurry, he postponed the sunset prayer in order to combine it with the evening prayer” (Bukhari, Muslim).

Namaz in transport

Moving on various types of transport, a Muslim does not always have the opportunity to perform namaz as expected. In such situations, some concessions also apply to believers:

1. Prayer while sitting or lying down.

If a Muslim does not have the opportunity to read namaz while standing in transport, then he has the right to pray while sitting, and if he cannot sit, then he has the right to pray while lying down.

2. Prayer not in the direction of the qiblah.

Often vehicles, such as a bus or train, constantly change the direction of their movement relative to the cardinal directions, making it difficult for a believer to determine where the Kaaba is located. In such situations, the believer is allowed to perform namaz in any convenient direction, even if the vehicle repeatedly made turns at the moment when the passenger was praying.
